The Year 2026 Declared the Era of the Frog Game.

While I found the recent indie games event was a delight to watch, my primary conclusion was perhaps unexpected: I am declaring that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

Exactly five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these hoppy characters. Considering a collection of frogs is termed an army, it appears they are taking over the industry.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Amphibians have been far from new to the world of games. From the arcade classic Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a niche presence. However, their prevalence has markedly increased in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam yields an overwhelming flood of results. Granted, some of these are novelty titles, a sizable number are bona fide titles centered on frogs.

A Data-Driven Dive

To understand this rise, I conducted a deep dive into the past five years of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My criteria was somewhat arbitrary, counting games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The data paint a clear picture: a steady uptick from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The frog's elevated place in the public consciousness is somewhat apparent elsewhere, such as the revival of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. Yet, the explosion in gaming looks especially pronounced.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

Frankly, this is a movement I can fully endorse. Frogs have inherent appealing traits for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are incredibly easy to be designed as memorable characters that tend to be a highlight in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their elastic legs and prehensile tongues facilitate a host of creative gameplay ideas.

A number of the announced projects clearly utilize these traits. Examples include the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even started—and the potential for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the most significant year for amphibian gaming.

When these games find success—and traditionally, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we might just be entering a full-blown croaking cultural moment.
